The area of the Maldives is around 298 km and the population of the Maldives in 2016 is around 4, 27,756. The GDP of the Maldives from the 2017 estimate is $3.578 billion and per ca-pita GDP is $9,948. The Maldives is situated at the top of the Chagos- Maldives-Laccadive Ridge.
There is political instability in the Maldives due to the arrest of their Vice President Ahmed Adeeb who had been appointed as the vice President of the Maldives just 3 months before the Vice President Abdulla Jihad. Vice President Ahmed Adeeb was arrested due to his connection in the explosion on the Presidential speedboat on the 28th September. Due to such type of violence in the Maldives there is some instability in the Maldives and the investigation is going on and the Maldives Police wants to sort out these issues as quickly as possible and they are also trying to stop such explosions in the Maldives. India and the Maldives both these nations are the founding members of the SAARC (South Asian Association for the Regional Cooperation). Maldives President Abdulla Yameen also noted that India’s assistance has been an “invaluable contribution” to the Maldives. The Maldives parliament had passed a legislation approving a free trade agreement (FTA) with the China. But India had raised a lot of questions regarding the FTA which was between the Three Countries: India, China and Maldives. Later the Maldives President Abdulla Yameen stated that the Maldives government is working towards a free trade agreement between the Maldives and the India. Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Maldives President Abdulla Yameen have been very much amiable towards each other and both these seem to carry good relations between India and Maldives irrespective of their nation problems.
